Fall and Spring Internship Opportunities

The Smithsonian Libraries still has several internship projects available for fall of this year and spring of 2013. Although these projects are unpaid, we are happy to work with your school to help you obtain credit. Below are a few brief descriptions. Improving Public Access to Artists’ Books at SIL               

Dates preferred: Fall or spring semester
Full time or Part time: either
Intern Supervisor: Anna Brooke
Location of internship: Hirshhorn Museum Library
Desired knowledge/skill sets (include education level): MLS student or graduate with knowledge of artists’ books and cataloging
Brief description of project: Artists’ books at Smithsonian Institution Libraries cannot be identified in the online catalog. To improve public access we plan to scan the barcodes of artists’ books in the Hirshhorn Museum library collection

History and Culture Reference Review

Dates preferred: Fall 2012 and Spring 2013
Full time or Part time: Either one
Intern Supervisor: William E. Baxter (in general) History and Culture branch librarians (in particular)
Location of internship: NASM, NMAH, NPM, MSC, Anacostia
Desired knowledge/skill sets:  Understanding of the selection and de-accessioning process for reference and general collections materials (collection development)
Brief description of project:
This project is to assist reference librarians in the History and Culture branches in reviewing their general subject as well as reference collections.

American Art/Portrait Gallery Research Collection Processing 

Dates preferred: after 9/10/2012
Full time or Part time: either
Intern Supervisor: Doug Litts
Location of internship: AAPG Library (Victor Building)
Desired knowledge/skill sets (include education level): archival training, knowledge of Archivists’ Toolkit
Brief description of project:
The AAPG Library holds several collections of research material on particular subject areas. These collections, while valuable, have no accessibility because they are collections of material and are not cataloged. The intern will create finding aids to these collections using the Archivists’ Toolkit in order to provide access to these special collections.
