The Gifts & Exchange Unit of the Libraries received a long awaited book for the library in the African Art museum this August. On March 14, 1994, the Libraries requested a copy of the book Brief History of Voodoo: Slavery & the Survival of the African Gods, written by A.P. Antippas. We requested this book from Marie Laveau’s House of Voodoo in New Orleans, Louisana.
On August 6, we opened up a package in our mail, and we found the original letter from 1994, along with a copy of the book! The book is a guide to the “Strange Gods, Strange Altars” exhibit at the Marie Laveau’s House of Voodoo museum.
Marie Laveau was a New Orleans native, born in 1801, who practiced Voodoo, and is sometimes referred to as the Voodoo Queen. The book offers a detailed description of the exhibit, along with the history of Voodoo, New Orleans, and religion. There’s also a prayer to Marie Laveau in the back.
Here’s the letter and the book cover!
