On today, July 31, in 1790, the first U.S. Patent was granted to Samuel Hopkins. From the United States Patent and Trademark Office:
On July 31, 1790 Samuel Hopkins was issued the first patent for a process of making potash, an ingredient used in fertilizer. The patent was signed by President George Washington. Hopkins was born in Vermont, but was living in Philadelphia, PA when the patent was granted.

Potash is used to make everything from soap to fertilizer to glass. The recipe book above focuses mainly on arsenic soap, for a naturalist's preservation of specimens, but includes potash in one recipe, where one can "form cakes like ordinary soap." Potash is the ordinary name for Potassium Carbonate but it’s more commonplace cousin, soda ash or Sodium Carbonate, is far more often used to make soap and is also used in taxidermy or preservation of zoological specimins. As every school-child should know, Potassium and Sodium lie next door to each other in the Periodic Table but there is a ready supply of Sodium in the form of ordinary salt.
The biggest use for Potash is as a fertilizer so the soap reference is really for peripheral interest.
On the anniversary date of the issuance of the first patent to Samuel Hopkins, I have been moved to try and set the record straight — again! The holder os the first patent had nothing to do with Vemont. A birthright Quaker, he was born in Maryland and spent most of his life in Philadelphia. In a comedy of errors that persists to this day, and in spite of two articles of mine published in 1998, myths live on. The Smithsonian may have created an entirely new one in having Samuel Hopkins born in Vermont, but taking up residence in Philadelphia at the time the patent was iasued. That’s inventing history that never happened.
