Every day, librarian Janet Stanley and the staff of the Warren M. Robbins Library at the National Museum of African Art work tirelessly in support of the Smithsonian’s guiding purpose: to foster the increase and diffusion of knowledge. This African Art Library plays an essential role in connecting colleagues, researchers, and artists around the world to engage in promoting the critical work that ensures a future of knowledge and discovery of African art.

Resources at the fingertips of our expert librarians and staff allow them to respond quickly and connect more deeply with users in Africa and around the world. With our latest digitization efforts, we are making it easier to “increase and diffuse” knowledge immediately, even across oceans.
This extraordinary outreach and the relationships it creates are critical to the progressive study and creation of African art and to the Library’s mission. As a result, the Robbins Library sends important new African art publications to 125 academic libraries in Africa free of charge.
