New to the Hirshhorn Library: Latin American Artists

Since 2014, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden Library (HMSG) has received grants totalling $15,000 to catalog materials of Latin American artists. Former Smithsonian American Art Museum Curatorial Assistant, Florencia Bazzano-Nelson, explains why these materials are important:

“Scholarly holdings regarding Latin American art are important because they provide the historical and cultural context for many artists in these collections … In a global environment, it is important for us to understand what is happening in the arts of other places, especially those places that have maintained a fluid cultural dialogue with the United States for more than two centuries.”

Funds for this ongoing project were provided by the Washington Art Library Resources Committee (WALRC). This non-profit is made up of research institutions related to art and architecture in the metropolitan DC area. With their support, the HMSG library has had over 200 materials processed so far. Below are some highlights from the recently cataloged items.

Artists Books tour for the 13th Biennial Book Arts Fair and Conference

This post was written by Anna Brooke, head of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Gallery Library.

We just can’t get enough of art book fairs! Local nonprofit, Pyramid Atlantic Art Center, for printmaking, papermaking and book arts, sponsored the 13th Biennial Book Arts Fair and Conference,  last month. As one of the DC tours offered to participants, the Hirshhorn Museum Library gave a presentation on our collection of artist’s books. American Art Portrait Gallery Library (AAPG) staff joined the presentation due to the large and enthusiastic response.

The New and Improved Hirshhorn Audio

A few months back, we set out to ingest the Hirshhorn Museum Library Audio Archive from our old site into our new, Drupal-run site.  The collection include audio clips of interviews with artists as well as lectures and other events held at the museum from 1969-2004. With the use of views and panels, we were able to set up the Hirshhorn audio page in a similar layout to the old site.  With the use of feeds import, we were able to ingest all of the information about each and every lecture. We converted the links of the media files to audio players so that you never have to leave the page you are on in order to hear the supporting audio. It was a great opportunity to flex my Drupal muscles.
