The Dibner Library received a newly transferred collection of Deutsche Farber-Zeitung, a 19th century periodical on textile dying that includes color samples on wool, cotton, and silk. A summer intern discovered insect carcasses within the gutters of some while organizing, so they were sent to the Libraries’ Book Conservation lab for freezing.
Katie Wagner, Libraries Book Conservator, and I arrived in Port-au-Prince on May 23rd to assist with the Haiti Cultural Recovery Program. The project focused on surface cleaning and rehousing the rare book collection from the Bibliothèque Nationale d’Haiti.
Over the course of five weeks, I worked with the Preservation Services Department, where I had the opportunity to learn and practice a variety of preservation and conservation techniques.
The Libraries welcomes Don Stankavage to the Preservation Services Department this summer as he completes his practicum requirement toward an MLIS at Catholic University.
I am currently a conservation graduate student at the Institut National du Patrimoine in Paris and I have been accepted in the Book Conservation Lab in the Preservation Department at the Libraries (SIL) to complete part of my 4th year internship requirement.
The conservation lab is working on two printed and bound editions of comic strips that originally ran in The New York Herald at the turn of the 20th century. The books are part of the Cooper-Hewitt Library collection.
