Hirshhorn Museum Press and Publicity Books

This post was written Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Gallery Library volunteer Shawon Sarkar.

In the middle of the vast collection of art books, exhibition catalogues, and serials, there are 20 black notebooks on a shelf at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden Library. These are the press and publicity books holding archival materials on the founding of the museum, the past exhibitions, and the Hirshhorn family.

The nine volumes of General Publicity: Joseph H. Hirshhorn contain press releases, letters, photographs regarding Mr. Hirshhorn’s vast art collection, his decision to bestow the collection to American people, the plans for building the museum, the initial building architecture of Hirshhorn museum and the sculpture garden.

The other volumes cover the museum’s grand opening ceremony in 1974, exhibitions details, photographs of many events held at the museum.

At first glimpse, these black binders are not impressive, but as you turn the pages, they unfold the history of one of the most prominent centers of contemporary modern art in America.
