Celebrating the Libraries’ 50th Anniversary at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute

On January 24, 2018, the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) Earl. S. Tupper Library of Tropical Biology hosted an Open House in celebration of the Smithsonian Libraries 50th anniversary. The event honored the Library’s rich legacy and celebrated its impact supporting scholarship, research, and discovery at STRI.  Attending the Open House were STRI staff and scientists, as well as distinguished members of the Panamanian community, including representatives of the National Library of Panama, the University of Panama, and the United States Embassy.

Science Executive Committee in Panama

On March 22-29, I traveled to Panama and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) with members of the Smithsonian’s Science Executive Committee. This is the science unit directors group who meet with the interim Undersecretary for Science each month. Others on the trip were Scott Miller, the Office of the Undersecretary for Science (OUSS) staff, Cynthia Brandt Stover, Smithsonian Campaign Director and Jenny McWilliams, Science Advancement Officer. Oh yes, and Stacy Cavanaugh’s 12-year-old son.

“Snow, snow, snow, snow everywhere, piled up as high as the tops of street cars.” I think we can relate to the words of the late G. Frank Lydston M.D. from p.23 of his travel book, Panama and the Sierras: A Doctor’s Wander Days.  Written over one hundred years ago, Dr. Lydston’s book was able to capture a timeless sentiment and fulfill every winter warrior’s fantasy of escaping bitter cold by fleeing to the tropics.
