The Smithsonian Libraries announces the Burpee Foundation as the sole sponsor for the upcoming exhibition Cultivating America’s Gardens. The exhibition opens in the Smithsonian Libraries Exhibition Gallery at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in April 2017.
Using books and objects from Smithsonian Libraries and Smithsonian Gardens, Cultivating America’s Gardens will include early horticulture publications, 19th century popular and new “exotic plants,” prominent landscape designers, selling seeds, victory gardens, the romance of the American lawn and gardens of today. The Burpee Foundation grant will fund exhibition design, fabrication, conservation of books and objects, installation, programming, website design and marketing.
“The Burpee Foundation is committed to educating the public about gardening and horticulture in the United States,” said George Ball, Chairman and CEO of W. Atlee Burpee and Chairman of the Board of the Burpee Foundation. “We’re thrilled to partner with the Smithsonian to tell the story of the American garden to visitors from all over the country and world, both in person and online.”
The Smithsonian Libraries depends on private philanthropy for its exhibition programs and related presentations by experts, which are free and open to the public.

I really hope I get a chance to go see this when it starts. As an avid gardener this is a must. Great big thanks to Burpee for their generosity.
Would Burpee Foundation offer help with funding a huge Southeast Ne. Cancer Memorial Garden. We are non profit and a community of volunteers working at this tribute to cancer survivors ,those fighting, and to all our loved ones who lost their painful battle to Cancer.
Hi Jan,
