In anticipation of Smithsonian Libraries’ participation in this year’s Museum Day Live events on Saturday March 12th, we wanted to highlight Library Preservation work at the Book Conservation Lab here at Smithsonian Libraries, and draw attention to the varied interests and skills that are inherent to Preservation work and are important and driving forces in preserving library collections for the future.

The brilliant sparkle of a diamond, the saturated blood-red of a ruby, and the rich deep blue of a sapphire become the building blocks of one of Salvador Dalí’s lesser known artistic enterprises: jewelry design. The renowned Catalonian artist, most famous for his mind-bending Surrealist paintings of dream worlds and for his eccentricity as a self-proclaimed “genius,” began to design his jewelry collection in 1941 and continued the artistic project until 1970.
From Feburary 1-5, 2016 the New York Academy of Medicine (NYAM) is encouraging cultural institutions and crayon enthusiasts to join together for #ColorOurCollections. Institutions such as NYAM, the Biodiversity Heritage Library and the Smithsonian Libraries will provide inspiration and coloring sheets for artists of all ages to fill in. Colorers can share their creations on social media by tagging the organization and using the hashtag #ColorOurCollections.

Among the many offerings for teens at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Gallery, ARTLAB+ gives teens a place to express their creativity via technology and art. One analog way teens connect with art is through graphic novels.
The Smithsonian Libraries is pleased to offer five paid internship opportunities for the summer of 2016. Projects topics are diverse and include art history research, collections assessment, educational program development and more. Applications are due January 15th, 2016. Each year, thousands of students from around the country participate in National History Day competitions. These contests challenge students to create exciting, well-researched projects that explore historic people and events.
This year Smithsonian Libraries was invited to be a partner organization and help kick off National History Day’s opening webinar to celebrate this year’s theme Exploration, Encounter, and Exchange in History. We jumped at the opportunity to create a five minute video to share five resources that would help inspire students as they developed their 2016 projects.
