Erin Clements Rushing is the Outreach Librarian for Smithsonian Libraries and Archives. She enjoys sharing the Libraries and Archives' treasures with new audiences and telling the stories from the stacks through various outreach efforts. She coordinates social media and the blog (Unbound), plans tours and manages the internship program. She also handles rights and reproductions for library collection images and acts as point person for copyright concerns. Erin holds an M.L.S from the University of Maryland, as well as a B.A. in History and Art History.

National History Day resources and a Hackathon!

Each year, thousands of students from around the country participate in National History Day competitions. These contests challenge students to create exciting, well-researched projects that explore historic people and events.

This year Smithsonian Libraries was invited to be a partner organization and help kick off National History Day’s opening webinar to celebrate this year’s theme Exploration, Encounter, and Exchange in History. We jumped at the opportunity to create a five minute video to share five resources that would help inspire students as they developed their 2016 projects.

The brief and entertaining history of the Second Army Air Service

The Second Army Air Service was a unit of the United States Army  stationed on the Western Front during World War I. The Second Army Air Service Book, from the collections of the National Air and Space Museum Library, offers a purposely light-hearted account of the unit’s brief history. The group’s arrival in France came a mere month before an armistice was signed ending the war on November 11th, 1918.

Want more creepy skeletons? Join us for a live Periscope tour on Thursday, October 29th at 1pm!

Halloween is quickly approaching and with it come the traditional decorations of bats, pumpkins, ghosts and of course, skeletons. Back in the 1500’s, one man changed the way the medical world saw the skeletal and muscular systems of the human body. That man, Andreas Vesalius, illustrated anatomical features in his De humani corporis fabrica (On the structure of the human body) in a way never before seen. Although the pages below may seem pretty gruesome they come from one of the most influential anatomy books of all time.

Neville-Pribram Mid-Career Educators Award for Summer 2016

_DSC0136 The Smithsonian Libraries is pleased to offer a call for applicants for the 2016 Neville-Pribram Mid-Career Educators Award. The Vine Deloria, Jr. Library for the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) is the host library for the selected 2016 Educator. In operation since 1999, the Deloria Library is the 20th library of the Smithsonian Libraries and is located in Suitland, MD in the NMAI’s Cultural Resources Center (CRC) where it shares research and collection space with the NMAI Archives.
