The Biodiversity Heritage Library for Africa (BHL-Africa) officially launched during a ceremony hosted by the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) at the Pretoria National Botanical Garden in Pretoria, South Africa on April 15.
A dual citizen of the United States and the United Kingdom, Jackie Chapman joined Smithsonian Libraries staff in February. Jackie received an undergraduate degree in the College of Letters from Wesleyan University (Middletown, CT) and a Master of Science in Library Science degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Most recently, she worked at the North Carolina Digital Heritage Center, a statewide digitization project capturing the cultural history of North Carolina, where she spent almost two years immersed in digitization, digitization work flows, metadata and social media for the organization.
The Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL) has welcomed a new member: the Library of Congress. The fifteenth partner of the BHL, the Library of Congress will contribute to the digitization of historical science literature in the collection. All material will be online, free and available to the public.
The Biodiversity Heritage Library has released a new user interface. The new interface was informed by usability studies and is based on the design and functionality of the BHL-Australia portal.
The International Data Group’s Computerworld Honors Program announced the Biodiversity Heritage Library as a 2013 Laureate on March 19. The annual award program honors visionary applications of information technology promoting positive social, economic and educational change.
Grace Costantino, Program Manager for the Biodiversity Heritage Library, was awarded a National Museum of Natural History Peer Recognition award as “Social Media Maven” at the building’s ceremony on December 11.
