The Cost of Scanning One Page…

The Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL), in its global efforts to digitize biodiversity literature and make it freely available to the world, ensures that this precious knowledge is available to everyone, everywhere. The BHL currently provides access to over 42 million pages and over 87,000 images and is changing the face of research methodology. Scientists around the world are using BHL to identify and classify species, facilitate further scientific research, and support conservation efforts to prevent extinctions.

Smithsonian Libraries Announces 2014 Professional Development Internships

The Smithsonian Libraries will offer new, paid internships for the Professional Development Program in the summer of 2014. These internships are open to graduate students interested in working in research and museum libraries. The Libraries will award up to three paid summer internships this academic year.

Digital Collections Report and Webinar Features Biodiversity Heritage Library

The Biodiversity Heritage Library is profiled in Searching for Sustainability: Strategies from Eight Digitized Special Collections, a major study funded by the Institute for Museum and Library Services and conducted by Ithaka S+R in partnership with the Association of Research Libraries. The study shares good practices for teams planning for and managing digitized resources.

Botany, Horticulture and Biodiversity for Intern Adriana Marroquin

adriana01This post was written by Adriana Marroquin, intern in the Botany-Horticulture Library as well as the Biodiversity Heritage Library.

I’ve been an intern at the Smithsonian Botany-Horticulture library since February and am a little over halfway done with my time here. A Maryland native, I hold a Bachelors of Fine Arts in writing, literature and publishing from Emerson College, and recently earned an Masters of Library Science from the University of Maryland. Previously, I worked as a research assistant at the Harvard Forest paleoecology lab, a library assistant at the Harvard Botany Libraries, and a bibliographic data intern at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Central Library.

Council on Botanical and Horticultural Libraries Awards Biodiversity Heritage Library

BHLlogo_WPThe Biodiversity Heritage Library received the Charles Robert Long Award of Extraordinary Merit from the Council on Botanical and Horticultural Libraries (CBHL) on May 9. It is the highest honor bestowed by CBHL and was founded to honor outstanding contribution and meritorious service to the CBHL or in the field of botanical and horticultural libraries or literature.
